Learning Objectives:

  • To understand ‘rurality’ and why we are interested in it.
  • To gain a basic understanding of rural health intelligence including operational definitions and integrating rurality into public health analysis.
  • To raise awareness of rural health issues.
  • To revisit how to perform a HNA with a rural focus, using farmers as an example.
  • To develop an understanding of the telehealth initiative and its effectiveness in a rural context.
  • To understand the rural dimensions of health policy and be able to discuss the opportunities and threats to health and wellbeing.
  • To gain an understanding of the Government’s commitment to Rural proofing health policies
  • To discuss the Rural Proofing for Health Toolkit and how it can be used by Public Health Trainees

Learning Outcomes

Phase 1:

1.1 Show awareness of available data to describe the health status and determinants of a local population and compare with other populations using appropriate statistical and standardisation techniques and identify localities or groups with poor health

3.3 Identify the key issues which must be addressed when developing policy options

Phase 2:

3.4 Propose evidence-based policy options for solving problems and develop appropriate strategy

Phase 3:

1.4 Analyse data of populations in specific geographical areas and in particular groups of people in order to assess health status, health inequalities, determinants and different needs to support prioritisation of action
