South West Public Health Regional Training Committee

Key points of meeting held 09 October 2012

Training Location Zones

NHS Dorset and NHS Bournemouth & Poole will be returning to Wessex Deanery from April 2013.

New Training Location zones will be:

  • Cornwall & Isles of Scilly / Devon / Plymouth / Torbay / Somerset
  • Gloucestershire / Wiltshire / Swindon / Bath & NE Somerset
  • Gloucestershire / South Gloucestershire / North Somerset / Bristol / Somerset

Recruitment

5 StRs will be recruited in 2013, possibly 6, following detailed costings.  2 ACF posts, one in Plymouth/Exeter, one in Bristol.

Careers evenings had been organised in Bristol and Saltash for people interested applying to the South West Public Health Training Programme.

Academic Public Health

ACF posts are open to medically qualified StRs only.  The training programme will adopt a fairer and more equitable process for providing support for StRs with an interest in academic public health who:

  • Come from a background other than medicine;
  • Develop an interest in academic public health whilst on the training programme.

Quality Panels

Quality panels to grade all training locations against GMC standards will take place on 1st November and 4th December.  Pilot QPs took place in 2011.

Training Programme Arrangements

Gloucestershire Foundation Hospital Trust will be the host employer for the training programme from 1st April 2013.  Consultation on the TUPE process is underway.

Kate Rocha’s (HR & Development Manager) maternity leave will be covered by Diane Lloyd (diane.lloyd@southwest.nhs.uk) from November 2012.

A gradual move from South Plaza to Severn Deanery and hot desk sights for the programme team will take place over the coming months.

Technology Working Party

This working party is looking at the use of technology and how to make best use of it within the training programme.

Health Protection Training

No changes are foreseen to HP training once the regional office for South of England is established in Reading.

CPD

Members of the FPH should be aware of the revised CPD guidance for doctors from GMC.

Supervisor accreditation

All educational supervisors must now be fully accredited and Beth Carpenter will be contacting any supervisors whose Intrepid account does not show attendance at all seven core competency training.
