SOUTH WEST PUBLIC HEALTH TRAINING PROGRAMME

POLICY FOR PAYMENT OF EXPENSES FOR NATIONAL TREASURE PLACEMENTS

Specialty Registrars in Public Health are encouraged in the South West to seek out national opportunities and placements outside of the South West region previously called National Treasure placements.  In doing so they seek to advance their specialist skills in a global specialty.

Primarily these placements are usually based in London working with highly influential people and departments.

This policy has been developed to allow the South West Training Programme to support Specialty Registrars financially in an exceptional situation in Public Health, whereby the geography and nature of these placements takes them away from their place of normal residency, and incurs costs which are often difficult for them to bear themselves.  This policy will allow the Training Programme to support Specialty Registrars with these costs particularly in relation to travel and accommodation when they are still having to support residence in the South West where their Public Health training and educational supervision remains and often family remain.

Financial support claimable

Specialty Registrars will be able to claim the below costs in an exceptional situation when taking up such placements:-

Owner-occupier of a property in the South West region – able to claim temporary accommodation in temporary area and/or travel to and from the South West as and when required OR commuting travel to temporary placement.

Renting a property in the South West region – able to claim temporary accommodation OR travel to and from the South West as and when required.

These expenses and the method of claiming must be approved by the Training Programme prior to commencing the placement.   Specialty Registrars are required to look for ways of keeping the cost to a minimum at all times ie advance rail fare etc.

This policy should aim to allow Specialty Registrars in Public Health to take advantage of all opportunities, if they wish to do so, and provide an equal opportunity for all to take up such posts irrelevant of their circumstances outside of the training programme.
