UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA)

About UK Health Security Agency

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is responsible for protecting every member of every community from the impact of infectious diseases, chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear incidents and other health threats. We provide intellectual, scientific and operational leadership at national and local level, as well as on the global stage, to make the nation's health secure.

UKHSA South West is one of nine regional teams charged with the delivery of specialist health protection functions in England.

UKHSA South West Training Location

UKHSA South West replaced PHE South West as the host training location for health protection mandatory placements from 1 October 2021 when PHE was legally disestablished. The existing Health Protection Team, EPRR Team and Business Operations team form the core of the South West footprint for UKHSA within the Health Protection Operations Group Pan-Regional Directorate. Working closely with these teams are the South West Field Service Team, Regional Communications Team and Centre for Radiation, Chemicals and Environmental Hazards (CRCE) Chilton/Bristol Office.

The training location is physically located across two principle sites in Bristol, and Totnes – however, hybrid and flexible working arrangements have been normalised across the team and UKHSA are sensitive to the learning and development needs of StRs generally and individually.

Public Health Training in this Location

UKHSA South West as a training location is responsible for the delivery of the four-month minimum mandatory health protection training placements, as well as longer attachments for senior registrars hoping to specialise in this field.  UKHSA facilitates ongoing supervision of registrars for health protection learning activity beyond the mandatory placement, including clinical and administrative oversight of on-call duties, support with preparation for MFPH Part B examinations, and advice on service/academic projects related to this domain.
